What happens when you combine a developer, an Apple Watch and a daily commute on the Washington State Ferry? … Each weekday morning, nearly half of the Dogfish team is among the more than 75,000 Puget Sound residents who commute to work or school on board a Washington State Ferry. So, when one of them got an Apple Watch, it was only natural they decided to leverage it to improve their commute. Thus the FerryWatch app was born.
With a focus on easy access to accurate and timely information, efforts concentrated on using key features of both the iPhone and the Apple Watch to maximize the user experience. FerryWatch is integrated with WSDOT’s REST APIs for up-to-date schedule and capacity information. Along with route and schedule details, the app lets users add favorite routes to their ‘Watch List’ for quicker access. The watch component features a Glance Interface for the user’s favorite route, using Location Services to find the next departing ferry closest to their location. And, both the iPhone and Watch components let the user know how many drive up spaces are still available on that vessel, so they know whether their vehicle will be able to board.
